5 Ways Criminals are Snatching Your Identity While You Travel

Every day, millions of people travel. People go on vacation, travel for business or to visit family. Traveling is a constant in many lives and because of this, it is one way that criminals can easily use to gain access to another’s identity.

While you travel, you are usually not on guard and there are many factors that can lead to the loss of your identity. Criminals will use what they can, when they can to gain access to your identity and then use your name to gain access to your bank accounts, credit cards and much more. It is important to remember the following problem areas to avoid having your identity stolen while you travel.

Wallet

Your wallet is your lifeline during travel. The wallet has your identification, cash, credit cards and other important documents. It is important to keep your wallet close at hand. However, when we travel, we use our wallet a great deal; to pay for hotel stay, food and other travel necessities. A wallet can easily be stolen from a pocket or purse and then you are left without the tools you need while away from home. Keep your wallet on lockdown so that you will not lose your identity in this manner.

Luggage

Another way that a criminal can have access to your identity is your luggage. Many travelers will place personal items, such as credit cards and personal documents in their suitcase. This is not smart. If a piece of luggage is stolen with personal information inside, the criminal will then be able to use this information to gain access to your personal accounts. Keep your personal information at home and out of your luggage to keep your identity safe.

Unsecured Wi-Fi Connection

When traveling, most people still need to stay connected. One way to stay connected is to use a Wi-Fi connection. Wi-Fi connections are available pretty much anywhere, especially at hotels and airports, which are major areas of travel. Criminals work hard to hack these free connections and then access your personal information. It is imperative that travelers check the internet connection they are using to make sure the proper security precautions are in place. It is also best to stay away from personal websites such as bank accounts, credit cards, etc. This way, if a connection is unsecure, the criminal will not have access to your account.

Hotel

A hotel is one place where travelers are supposed to be safe. Employees are there to take care of your every need. Hotels are supposed to be comfortable and inviting and travelers however they can be a hot zone for identity theft. Hotels have data bases that are filled with personal information of their travelers. If this information is obtained by the wrong person, the traveler can lose everything, from the cash in their bank accounts, their social security number and their name. Hotels are expected to offer high security measures to keep the personal information in check, however sometimes these databases are accessed by criminals. Be aware of the security measures at your hotel to be sure that your information is safe and secure.

Airports

As we mentioned before, an airport can be a problem for identity theft, especially when considering a Wi-Fi connection. However, there are also other ways that criminals can steal your identity at the airport. Criminals know that you are traveling and are working only to reach your destination or home. they know you are distracted. Since you are distracted, they can strike! They can steal your luggage, your wallet, your ticket and other important information. It is essential to be on guard at all times while you are at the airport to avoid having your identity stolen.

Overall, it is important to practice safety precautions when traveling. Travel light and keep most personal items at home. Hopefully, your identity will stay intact with proper guidance and precautions!
