5 of The Best Hiking Trails in The World

What makes a great hiking trail? Is it the chance to see some of the world’s best scenery close up, or is it the physical challenge of scaling mountains and dangerous passes?

The best hiking trails in the world combine these features, and provide significant challenges for the serious hiker. Some of the best trails include the Annapurna Circuit in Nepal, the Kalalau Trail in Hawaii, and the Tonquin Valley hike in Canada, as well as the Grand Canyon, and Grindelwald in the Swiss Alps.

Annapurna Circuit, Nepal

This Nepalese circuit represents a great way to see the mountain ranges of Nepal, and the valleys doted with lodges, Buddhist temples and villages. With an altitude of 17,749 feet in places, this trek is not for casual hikers, and takes about 17 to 21 days, crossing regions like Lamjung, Manang, Mustang and Myagdi. Elevations cross Besisahar to Nayapul, as well as the summit in Thorung La pass. Mountains encountered include Poona Hill, Manaslu and Gangapurna, while hikers can visit holy sites and temples. A local guide is recommended for more difficult sections, while an entrance permit is required for the Annapurna Conservation Area Project in the mountains.

Kalalau Trail, Hawaii

One of the best ways to see Hawaii’s natural beauty, the Kalalau Trail winds alongside the coastline of the island, and is defined by sheer drops, waterfalls, and the chance to see dolphins, whales and turtles in the waters below. The trail is around 11 miles long, and rises and falls through valleys between Ke’e Beach and Kalalau Beach. Representing one of the only ways to access parts of the Hawaiian coast, and the beaches of Hanakapi’ai, hikers should be wary of the sharp drops, and the high surf in parts of the trail. Those that do can witness rare tropical plants, wild goats, and unbeatable island views.

Grand Canyon Hike, Arizona

Long a key destination for hikers, the Grand Canyon can be tackled in a number of ways. Comprehensive hikes covering 44 miles can be completed in 4 to 6 days by experienced hikers, and can take in various routes and rims, as well as corridor trails across the Colorado River and the South Kaibab Trail, as well as the Bright Angel trail. Water and food can be scarce in remote areas, while altitude can also be a problem. Careful planning is rewarded by 373 species of birds, and views across the Canyon. Lighter trails and guided tours are also available.

Grindelwald, Switzerland

This route through the Swiss Alps primarily connects Lake Baichal to Faulhorn Hut, and covers about 10 miles, while creating opportunities for combination with different mountain and lake trails. Cable cars can be taken up the mountains for downhill walks along the Eiger and Shreckhom, as well as via valley walks and chalets. Connections can also be made to Wengen, Lauterbrunnen and Murren, while gondolas can be taken from Grindelwald to Mannlichen. Easier hikes are provided to Gross Scheldegg.

Tonquin Valley, Canada

Located in the Canadian Rockies, Tonquin Valley is one of the most beautiful parts of Canada’s wilds. A particularly popular route runs between Portal Creek and McCarib Pass, and takes in Amethyst Lake. The 27 mile route takes around 3 to 5 days to complete, and allows hikers to experience Jasper National Park, the Rampart Mountains, and quartzite walls and trails. Guided tours are available, as is accommodation in wilderness lodges.
